Not all backlinks are created equal. Here’s how to spot toxic links before they damage your domain reputation.
1. Zero Organic Traffic
A site with a respectable DR but zero organic traffic is a serious red flag. It almost always means the domain’s content has been penalised, de-indexed, or is simply not crawled meaningfully by Google. A link from a site Google doesn’t trust enough to send traffic to won’t pass meaningful authority.
⚠️ A DR 40 site with 5,000+ monthly visitors is far more valuable than a DR 60 site with 0.
2. Excessive Outbound Links
Pages with 50+ outbound links in a single article dilute the link equity they pass. The value of your link is divided among every other link on the page. Check the specific page, not just the domain.
3. Thin or Duplicate Content
Sites built primarily with AI-generated or spun content are increasingly penalised. Google’s Helpful Content system actively discounts links from sites it deems unhelpful or low-effort.
4. Sudden DR Spikes
A domain that went from DR 5 to DR 60 in two months got there through link schemes, not organic growth. These DR spikes often collapse within 6 months, taking your link’s value with them.
5. Sitewide Footer or Sidebar Links
Links placed in footers or sidebars that appear on every page of a site are often discounted by Google and can look manipulative. Editorial, in-content links are always preferable.
